Pets Feeling Empathy

Pets can pick up on your emotional states. Cats, dogs and many mammals feel emotions. Scientists can determine this by scanning the brains of animals when they undergo some kind of emotional situation. Scientists surmise that when certain regions of the brain appear brighter or dimmer in brain scans due to neural activity, mammals undergo some kind of emotional response in their brains.

The same is true when scientists observe behavior in mammals. Chimpanzees, elephants, whales and dolphins may exhibit mourning when a loved one dies. People personally witness loyal dogs mourning their humans at funerals. One elderly cat, 15-year-old Little Andrew, reached out to touch his humans’ arms as they took him to his final trip to the vet.
