A warning was issued on Wednesday by the Food and Drug Administration that skin cancer creams with the active ingredient fluorouracil, also known as 5-FU, may cause death in pets including cats, dogs and other animals. Common brands of creams containing this drug include Carac, Efudex and Fluoroplex.
Five dogs reportedly became ill and died from ingesting the cream.
One dog punctured a tube of the prescription cream and began vomiting and experiencing seizures within two hours. Within twelve hours the animal had died.
Another dog received immediate veterinary treatment after ingestion but suffered for three days as his condition worsened, forcing the owner to make the difficult decision to euthanize him.
The drug is used to treat skin cancer and works as a topical chemotherapy treatment.Source: Cnn
