Animal-Related Power Outages: Monkey Takes Down Kenya

Usually when the power goes out and there isn't a clear weather-related reason, I assume someone probably ran their car into something important.

But according to a number of recent news reports, it's more likely that the cause is animal interference. It seems to be an industry-wide problem.squirrels-e1416827712257

TransGard, the maker of the patented fence that now protects 2,500 substations, uses stories of animal sabotage on its website to promote its products.

They also note that wildlife interference with power equipment is the most common cause of outages for public power utilities, according to the American Public Power Association.
